The day after Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) clinched the presidential nomination of his party, he went with all the other politicians to attend an AIPAC conference. Now, AIPAC stands for American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and what they basically are, in a nutshell, is a bunch of hard-working lobbyists for the state of Israel, where they exercise tremendous pressure on politicians to support everything that Israel wants without criticism. Criticism of Israel means political suicide for politicians in DC. Anti-semitic charges would be hurled at any critic, no matter how constructive the criticism might be. They have managed to get record amounts of foreign aid from the US to Israel, where such aid is almost negligible for all other nations. AIPAC is the one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington, and, definitely, the most powerful among ones for foreign governments.
"CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN" reads the slogan for the Obama campaign. Is this really what the American people have been longing for? Did the Bush years exhaust the public to a degree where they believe everything they hear?
How can a change come if the problem is the same. The solution does not only lie in "getting out of Iraq", it also lies in NOT REPEATING THE SAME MISTAKE. What AIPAC is doing is pressuring politicians to declare another war on Iran, just like they did with Iraq, which didn't turn out to be a catwalk, after all. Shaul Mofaz, the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister, calls a war with Iran "unavoidable".
If the US is indeed dragged into another war, a military draft might become unavoidable. The US economy is already suffering. A war with Iran would not only mean "a disaster" to the US, but it might also mean the end of the great USA, the world once knew. Another war would require billions in dollars spent overseas. One of the reasons the economy is in shambles is mainly the amount of overseas spending the Bush administration has been engaged in since the start of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
Barack Obama, who claims to bring change, failed to convince many of his supporters the day he spoke at AIPAC. He did declare that "whatever Israel wants will be done". He closed the discussion on all the issues that are supposed to be debatable, and declared Jerusalem to be the eternal undivided capital of Israel.
This proved that Obama is just another pawn in the hands of AIPAC, which, by the end of the day, dictates the US foreign policy.
Until real change comes some day, keep optimistic, and let's hope that people wake up!
